Art is a way to synthesize the human experience, from the general to the very specific. We dive into the world, we take in every possible sensation, opinion, fact, belief. Then we begin to edit. It is in the editing process that I become an artist. Why choose this mark over another? Why blend my colors a particular way? Why do some artists value the brush stroke while others seek to blend it out? Why do I love the feel of one metal against my skin and not another? Not every experience I have is inherently valuable, but through making art I can assign a value to it. I can say, "This is what I know; this is who I am." Is it art just because I say it is? Rudyard Kipling said, " And the first rude sketch that the world had seen was joy to his mighty heart, till the Devil whispered behind the leaves "It's pretty, but is it Art?"
