“Sharing” segment of the program
From Susan Stanton:
. Use green automotive tape “frog” tape for a good
edge without having the tape stick to the paper too much. Tom added that for a
really clean edge you can add medium to the top side of the tape.
. paperpaintings.com and stumbleupon.com were 2 sites
she recommended.
. You can use printmaking carving blocks to make
borders and designs using speedball ink or you can use art erasers to make a
stamp as well.
From Cathy Pabst:
. Put things into little plastic bags when you find
them for a project so you can keep them together as well as see them.
From Deb English:
. Use a letter file to store papers and other flatter
items.
From Bev Benker:
. Anne Bagby has a DVD about making “Complicated
Papers” stamp papers of your own design. Go to ccpvideos.com.

November 8, 2011 Board Meeting
In attendance: Susan Stanton, Deborah Robinson, Bev Benker, Candy Webber, Phil Frisk, Cathy Pabst, Renee Herring, Jeannette Davis, Bev Thompson
Meeting was called to order by Susan Stanton, standing in for Sally Hall. All present introduced themselves and talked about their association with RMCS. Most were charter members. Susan emphasized that we are a working board and a team. Candy Webber gave the treasurer’s report stating that our balance was $3,009.20. (See more in New Business and general meeting notes.) Several RMCS board positions needed to be filled. Susan read the duties required of each position. The following accepted the nominations and seconded them: Membership- Candy/Susan; Historian- Bev T/Candy; Exhibitions- Renee/Deb. All were approved.
Old Business:
. Gayle is still working on an exhibit for us at the
Sparks Gallery in Denver.
. We still need to decide on the Judge/Workshop leader for the members’ show in 2012. We will communicate by email to resolve that issue.
. Cathy informed us that RMCS will have the north wall of the gift shop available from Jan-March 2012 to exhibit works for sale. A maximum of 10 pieces no larger than 16”X20” are allowed. Exhibitors receive 60% of sale price and 40% of the sale price goes to the Art Center. Any Art Center members who purchase a piece will get a 10% discount that comes out of the Center’s 40%. Exhibitors will be chosen by lottery and may sign up tonight or on line. Works must be received before Jan 4th, 2012.
. Several members had works accepted in the National Collage Society show including Susan Stanton, John Anglim and Cathy Pabst. The works will be displayed online for one year. Congratulations.
. Don’t forget to email Cathy with information about future shows of interest to our members.
New
Business:
. Deb brought up the recommendation that RMCS
consider paying for anyone who does demos for our meetings
members and outside invitees alike. Possibly some gas and
materials for members would seem fair. Most agreed but no
formal motion was made. Further discussion and a decision to
follow.
. We signed cards for Maxine and Carolyn, former board members, to thank them for all their hard work as board members.
. The question as to whether or not to buy a page in the next edition of “Journeys” magazine was brought up. The cost would be $725-$100= $625. Since the goal of our organization is to teach, learn and share, Susan thought this might be a good move for us and give us more recognition. The estimated distribution is 15-20K people across the state. This includes places such as Vail, Aspen and Denver. Results of a vote= 8 yea, 1 nay. The works for the page will be determined by jury. Board members may be given preference. Susan is working for this magazine but the board agreed that it would not be a conflict of interest.
. Several members are presenting demos through PALS (Palisade Art Lovers) at the Artist’s Haven..Renee Herring will show alcohol ink techniques next Wednesday, November 16 at 10AM and the cost is $10. Deborah Robinson will present a demo on spectra art tissue technique on Wednesday, January 18th at 10AM.
. Raw Canvas gallery, an artist’s co-op, has moved to Main St and is looking for artists. A 10‘x10’ wall space is $100/mo. Cathy P. and Sue S. will talk to them about a space for RMCS members.
. We now have three galleries downtown, Oakley’s, Lintott & Kurtzman’s and Raw Canvas.
. New exhibit at the Blue Pig Gallery opens November 19 & 20th. Susan and Cathy are in the show.
. A question of “should we provide a written agenda for board meetings”. Decided to email one a week prior. Bev B made the motion and Phil seconded. All in favor.
. Phil Frisk shared some facts about the RMCS website. In January, there were 220 unique visitors to the site. Some are from foreign countries which is really special! About 1,000 “hits” on the site per month. Other sites were discussed like Facebook and Twitter and several of the members are already represented on those sites. It was decided that Phil would present this information tonight at the general meeting.
. It was brought to our attention that we need to review any suggestions placed in the suggestion box. Have we done that lately?
. A suggestion was made to have a meeting in the round so we can all hear.
The next general meeting will be held at Gayle Gerson’s on January 14th from 1-4PM with a board meeting before. Make the final decision on member’s show juror?
Renee moved that the meeting be adjourned and Cathy seconded.

a) Camille (Silver Palate) wants to bring in Lorie Reed from
Galesburg, IL to do a
workshop (she exhibited her work at the May show at the Art
Center) Susan
wondered if we could also use her to jury our member show at
the same time.
We should check her website
reedstudios.net to see other
things she has
done. Also to check any teaching credentials.
b) Susan suggested that Heather Peterson from the college
might be a good
choice to do a workshop as well. We could invite her to be a
guest?
5) Guest Speakers for General Membership
Meeting Sept. 9, 2011:
Cathey talked about the “critique group” that would be speaking tonight.
She has a list of their names as well as a handout of theirs about running a
critique group. Should we set up critique groups within our organization? All
agreed that feedback about our work is always good.
6) NAME TAGS! Yippee! A good idea to help everyone get to
know fellow members and guests.
7)MEETINGS

be a sharing opportunity for all materials, expertise, websites,
tools. We should write out the things we are sharing to make
it easier.

suggestions for the format: Pass around the piece of artwork
every 10 minutes or so; Move to different
medium stations; Start with a line and go from there; Work

May 24, 2011 Board Meeting
Sally Dolan called the meeting to order.
The treasury reports $2,749.73.
OlOld Business: Two suggestions from Susan Stanton for workshop leaders and judges for the 2012 show are the new mixed-media professor at Mesa State, or Gretchen Bierbaum, National Collage Society executive.
New Business: Cathey Pabst reported that she has been working with the Creamery regarding a possible show in September, 2011. She also said that Two Rivers Winery would like RMCS to show September 1-28, 2011. The winery is looking at having the month long show in one of the barrel rooms, and are especially interested in farm or vineyard related collages, and have provided Cathey with Riesling labels if anyone is interested in using them in their art. Under discussion is the advisability of having two shows running at the same time. It was the consensus at the meeting that two shows running at the same time would leave exhibit hangers short-handed.
Ashley Benton is looking for artists to work in the Paonia Art Walk, the last Friday of the summer months. You can contact her at 970-846-7175.
Board members have a term of one year. Vacancies will include Historian, as Maxine Buchholz is resigning, and Secretary, as Sheri LeBeau is also resigning.
It was suggested that a publicity package be put together as a long-term goal so that approaching show venue representatives with ideas would be easier, more uniform and efficient. A meeting will be held to discuss publicity package contents.
Meeting was adjourned.
May 14, 2011 General Membership Meeting
The May meeting was held in conjunction with the Art Student League from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This informal meeting gave participants the opportunity to bring their materials and work, as well as to stop occasionally for a demonstration.
Gayle Gerson gave a demonstration on collage techniques, including using tissue papers and altering them, and using Citrasolve as a solvent to distort inks on glossy magazines like National Geographic.
Deborah Robinson gave a demonstration of her “Windowpane” printmaking technique, using Avery labels, markers and embellishments to create a symmetrical design, based on a grid, to create a small work that can inspire a larger collage.
Cathey Pabst gave a demonstration on other collage techniques, including using Jet Blue as a resist for acrylic paints.
Tom Callenberg gave a demonstration on mat cutting techniques, including outside cuts, and internal bevel cuts. Participants were given an opportunity to cut sample mats for themselves.
Although the meeting conflicted with the Art Space Open Studio tours, resulting in lower attendance, it was both fun and educational.
March 8, 2011 Board Meeting
Sally Dolan brought the meeting to order. She then shared the news that congratulations were in order for Cathey Pabst, who was profiled in Grand Valley Magazine.
The treasury reports $2,774.73 and 41 members.

The wood show is being held in conjunction with the RMCS show, so 2/3 of the space is available. Please submit workshop leader ideas to Sally Dolan.
New Business: Art Space is planning a show in the fall. Artists wanting more information can go to www.artspacecolorado.org. If you are interested in doing a demonstration, please contact Gayle Gerson.
Deborah Robinson sent in her packet for her May demonstration of her “Windowpane” method, consisting of Avery labels, markers, glitter, etc. The artist will collect her own fee from participants.
Bev Thompson is working on a preliminary policy statement for compensating guest artists.
The Source Book will now be an online resource.
Board members serve for a term of one year. Sally asked which board members were planning to continue into the next year. Maxine Buchholz announced that she would be resigning her position so that she could plan a wedding.
March 8, 2011 General Membership Meeting
Sally Dolan called the meeting to order and introduced the guest speaker, Ashley Benton. Ashley is a Paonia mixed-media artist who spoke about a variety of her works and techniques, including using resins.
January 15, 2011 Board Meeting
The board meeting was held at Gayle Gerson's home, January 15, 11:00 a.m. Sally Hall, President, called the meeting to order. In attendance were Phil Frisk, Gayle Gerson, Susan Stanton and Beverly Thompson.
The Treasurer reported $2,924.73, and 41 members.
The next meeting will be held March 8, 2011.
Susan Stanton gave an update on the progress of expansion of RMCS on the Eastern Slope based on an email from Janice McDonald, our East Slope representative in Denver. Janice reports, "At this time, I have only about 10 names of collage artists who may be likely suspects for this group. I will organize a meeting for this spring and see what kind of interest there is. I can post notices at art supply store, art students league, etc. to try to reach some of those flying below the radar! And I'll take a look at the NCS roster and see if there are others to invite, possibly in Boulder, or other front range communities."
We discussed a long range plan (18-24 months) to sponsor a members' show on the Front Range and possible booking rental space or a community/municipal hall that potentially could be rent free for that show.
Susan Stanton reported on the March 8th members' meeting demo with Ashley Benton. We discussed a policy for compensating visiting guest artists for their time and travel expense. An honorarium of $50 was suggested.
A "Window Motherboard" demo is planned for the May meeting by Deborah Robinson. We discussed reimbursement for materials used in the demo. It was suggested that members sign up for the demo and contribute some amount, like $2-$3/each, for the materials they will use. Deborah will be contacted to get an estimate on the actual cost of the materials provided.
Beverly Thompson will put together a policy statement for compensating visiting guest artists as well as member presenters. It was suggested something, like a $5 gift card from Artist's Haven, be given to member presenters.
Donna Bergman has information from Airfloat Systems, Inc. for shipping artwork and the possibility of a 20% discount to RMCS members if we sign-up and give them our email list for promotion. We discussed a policy of protecting our mailing list from use of what might be considered spam. Names of our members are already available on our website if Air Float Systems needs to verify a person’s membership.
Door prizes for members' meeting drawings (valued at $8-$10) are contributed by board members. Gayle Gerson volunteered to provide the March meeting door prize and Beverly Thompson will give the May prize.
We discussed a prospectus about the Creamery Show in Hotchkiss for members to enter. We secured the "Peach" room at $150 for September for a Miniatures show with a 12"x12" size and 2 pieces per member limitation. Phil Frisk will submit three digital artwork examples from our RMCS Gallery photos for their poster and promotional material. All members will receive more information by email.
The 2012 Biannual Members' Show was discussed. We need to look for a Workshop Presenter Artist on the order of Jonathan Talbot. Susan thought that we might share the presenter with the group on the front range. We will schedule the Art Center Gould Gallery and possibly the hallway for overflow and the Colorado room for a Workshop meeting place.
There will be no printed agenda for the Members' Meetings (to save paper.) Sally Dolan reviewed the items to be placed on the agenda for the Jan. 15th membership meeting.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted from notes taken by Phil Frisk and Beverly Thompson in the absence of our secretary, Sheri LaBeau.

Announcement of Creamery Show in Hotchkiss for members in September in the "Peach" room. Miniatures to be exhibited with a 12"x12" size and 2 pieces per member limitation.
Patrick Metoyer provided Valentine cards for members to write notes for our troupes in Afghanistan and Bosnia.
Thanks again to Gayle Gerson for hosting the delightful RMCS January Members' Meeting at her home. We enjoyed unwrapping our "bundles" (some of which were frozen and wet!) to discover interesting stained and weathered papers to use in our collages, a heat-gun paper scorching demo by Thomas Calenberg, and exchanging partially finished collages to work on. A highlight was counter-tops full of goodies to munch on.
Respectfully submitted by Phil Frisk in the absence of our secretary, Sheri LaBeau.
November 9, 2010 Board Meeting
Sally Dolan, President, called the meeting to order.
The Treasurer reported $2,899.73, and 38 members.
The next board meeting will be held at Gayle Gerson's house, January 15, 100 a.m.
It has been moved that minutes be accepted by email and posted on the website rather than at the board meeting. Approved.
The RMCS show was successful. Cathey Pabst took notes on ways to improve the next show, including revamping the drop-off procedure, and having only one team hanging the show to avoid confusion.
Gayle demonstrated the DisCo Bundle that members will put together and leave to weather before the meeting at her house in January. She will also demonstrate it at the member meeting tonight.
The East Slope RMCS is currently being set up and Susan Stanton has been actively involved in helping Janice McDonald organize that. Some questions still need to be considered by the board about the amount of involvement and support that RMCS can provide them. It was agreed that we would try to provide umbrella support for the East Slope, and be actively involved in a future show in Denver. It was suggested that a smaller committee be formed to answer the most pressing needs.
Deborah Robinson would like to do a demo on her Windowpane Motherboard in May. It was suggested that May be used as a meeting for demos and experimentation.
The Creamery has again offered show space for the RMCS. It was suggested that a member be asked to oversee it with a board member.
The meeting was adjourned and opened to Roger McCoy's presentation on the jury process and what a judge looks for in a successful piece of work. His handout will be posted on the website.
The member meeting tonight will be "Collage Inspired by the Masters," as well as a demonstration of the DisCo Bundle (Disintegration Collaboration).
August 30, 2010 Board Meeting
Susan Stanton called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The May minutes were approved.
Candy Webber gave the financial report. RMCS has $2424.26, with a $25 membership pending. Susan noted that in July of 2007 the balance began with $420.00.
Phil Frisk made several updates to the website this summer. He is willing to serve as Webmaster, including updating membership list. The Board voted to ask Phil to become a Board member.
The theme "Growing by Pieces" was chosen for the 2010/2011 year. The first meeting of the year is also the Annual meeting. It will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Art Center. In addition to Annual meeting business, all members are encouraged to bring a piece that they would like to have critiqued before the show. There will also be a hands-on working time, so all members are encouraged to bring whatever they are working on, and all their materials.
November 9, 2010 will be a hands-on meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the Art Center. Silvia Wilhelm suggested creating collages inspired by the Master's works, and that will be the focus of this meeting. A Board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. before the regular meeting.
Gayle Gerson has generously offered to repeat the very successful meeting she held at her house. It will be a working meeting, on Saturday, January 15, 2011. All artists are encouraged to bring their starter collages they no longer wish to work on so another artist can give it a go. More details will be forthcoming.
The March meeting will be a combination of speaker and demonstrations. One suggestion is Ashley Benton from Paonia.
The May meeting will be a Celebration meeting, and a working one. Glue/medium and scissors are all the members need to bring. Other materials will be provided.
A "sharing box" will be created for the convenience of members who are struggling to carry so many supplies back and forth to the meetings. The box will be designed for all members to contribute to whenever they can, or contribute a few dollars to it now and then.
The drawings were quite a success last year, and the board voted to keep them.
Susan Stanton is stepping down as President. Following her 2009/2010 term she will continue to serve as Member of the Board, Past President, and NCS Regional Representative. Sally Dolan is interested in serving in the position and the Board highly recommends her.
The Bylaws were reviewed and the board voted to amend them. The Board of Directors made their recommendations for the Ballet for the upcoming 2010/2011 Board Term. Recommended were: Sally Dolan, Gayle Gerson, Candy Webber, Cathey Pabst, Maxine Buchholz, Susan Stanton, Caroline McDaniel, Phil Frisk, and Sheri LeBeau. Nominations will also be open to be given from the floor at the annual meeting. Phil Frisk will forward a reminder of the Annual Meeting, a copy of the Bylaws and a Board of Director's Ballot to all members.
The Second Biennial Member's Exhibition is October 1st. Members will also be sent an email copy of the prospectus. Board Members signed up for a variety of volunteer roles to facilitate the intake and hanging of work. Susan will confirm date and time for Roger McCoy to judge the exhibit.
The RMCS book that Maxine has been working on is as complete as it can be without further input from members. Members can still participate, and if they have lost their original paper they can contact Maxine at the Art Center. Maxine has offered to bring it to the September meeting.
Susan Stanton and Gretchen Bierbaum, from the National Collage Society, have contacted East slope collage artists to begin expansion work of RMCS and are communicating about a RMCS Regional Exhibit in the future in the Denver Area.
Susan adjourned the meeting at 9:00 p.m.

The past years format of 2009/10 z

March 9, 2010 Board Meeting
Gayle Gerson called the meeting to order. Present were Gayle Gerson, Cathey Pabst, Candy Webber, Maxine Buchholtz, and Sheri LeBeau
Gayle reported that an Art Student's League is being formed. The meetings will be held at Lincoln Park Barn, every third Sunday, beginning in June. Sara Alyn Oakley obtained a small grant to cover liability insurance and other start-up expenses. She worked with the city to gain access to the Lincoln Park Barn. Dues are tentatively set for $25.00 annually.
Connie Smith has finalized the plans for the art photography day with Rob and Patti Kurtzman, of Frameworks and Gallery. Anyone desiring photo documentation of art pieces can call Patti at 243-7074, by March 21, for an appointment. The photography will be done Sunday, March 28, 2010, with appointments from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Art Center. Maxine Buchholtz will be on hand that day to facilitate. The cost is $20.00 per piece, plus a $2.00 donation to the Art Center.
Connie will also bring copies of the "Best Practices" handout to the meeting for distribution to members and will send it to Phil Frisk for inclusion on the website. It was suggested that another name be found that does not imply a uniform standard for all artists, and Gayle suggested "Really Good Ideas." The handout will be an ongoing project.
Also, Connie asked the Business Incubator to come out to the May meeting and give some information on art as a business. Members are encouraged to send their questions to Connie Smith to be included in the program, although it will be an informal program. We would just like for the Business Incubator to have an idea of what our members are interested in, and we would not like to conflict with what Artspace is doing.
A community panel on mixed-media collage will be held Thursday, April 22, from 7:00-8:30 p.m., at The Fine Arts Building on Mesa State's campus. The room is TBA, but will possibly be in #214. The panel will be moderated by Jonathon Talbot, and will include John Anglim, Tamara Hollis, Caolo Lowry, Gayle Gerson, Camille Silverman, and Vinje Lawson. The public is welcome and there is no fee.
Jonathan Talbot Workshop: We currently have 15 participants signed up plus the two who won the scholarships. A second workshop is being planned for the following weekend. Jonathan will need some folks to help with hand-outs and maybe someone to order or pick up lunch. He needs a clean stack of newspapers 24 inches high (Susan can bring). Deb Snider will let us know what she would like help with those two days.
Financial Report: Candy Webber reported $1, 691 in the treasury. The Talbot workshop scholarship winners were Sheri LeBeau and Caroline McDaniel.
Candy Webber will send Phil Frisk a thank you card for the excellent work he has done on the website.
The Member's Show will be held at the Art Center in October. Roger McCoy agreed to judge the show, and RMCS agreed to pay a judging fee of $200. The prospectus will be ready by August, and preliminary information will be available at the May meeting. The entry fee will be $10 per piece, or $25 for three pieces. Since the show is for original artwork only (no prints), and not previously shown at the Art Center, there will also be a "Print Bin" where artists can sell prints of their work. The fee will be $15 to participate in the "Print Bin."
Gayle will check with Camille about the possible number of pieces that will fit into the Gould Gallery. If enough entry fees are not generated the RMCS will take that money out of the treasury budget. We recommend setting aside $200 for any shortfall. If all the fees are collected, however, the $200 could be used for a possible award for the show. Sheri LeBeau will work to acquire other awards for the show. Candy Webber will host an RMCS social for at some point during the opening week at her home. She will give more details as the planning becomes more firm.
Thanks so much Maxine for your expertise and time on the book project, which is well underway! The deadline has been extended to May 11, but artists are encouraged to submit their work and photo information to Maxine as quickly as possible.
John Anglim accepted the opportunity to create the logo. He submitted two possible ideas for the logo, and the board chose one that could be manipulated into either a horizontal or vertical format.
Cathey Pabst contacted the coordinator for May’s “Art & Jazz," but the festival does not accept organizations of artists, simply individuals willing to demonstrate. The coordinator also there would be no room to display art or sell it, and the board decided to not pursue that any further.
The next Board Meeting will be May 11th, 5:30 p.m., prior to the membership meeting.
The May 11th theme will be “ Merz” and the last meeting for the year. It was suggested that we have this meeting be a fun “party” kind of meeting with a little finger food and perhaps tea/wine, along with the drawing for people who brought guests. However, it was decided that the May meeting would be pretty full with the Business Incubator and Merz project, and that the social would be better reserved for the bash at Candy Webber's home in October.
Planning for Annual Meeting September 2010: At the last board meeting we discussed holding the Annual Meeting on a Saturday. This would give out of town folks an opportunity to attend. We could have a longer meeting to do the board nominations and then do some sort of hands on collage session. Please look at a calendar and discuss September 11th or 18th. We also would need to check with the Art Center to see if they have a Saturday available. Discussion on this was tabled until the May board meeting.
Meeting adjourned

Do you keep a database? How do you track which pieces are in a show and when do you pick them up? How should backs of art be finished? What are some ideas to display work locally? What is your system for organizing paper? What are some helpful studio tips for organization? What are some publications, books, websites, suppliers you like? Any other tips or ideas? Thanks to Connie for this undertaking.
